Letters from William "Billy" Justema

During the early to mid 1980s, my father, a collector of Mathers and Westons, corresponded with Justema,  then living in San Francisco, in an effort to help identify a woman who appeared in one of his Weston images and who he believed might have been Mather. Billy disagreed.

Below are a collection of three (3) handwritten letters between Justema and Milton Parker in which Justema points out the clear differences in appearance between the woman in the 1921 photograph and Mather. Parker, a physician, enlisted the assistance of a good friend and plastic surgeon to help compare the faces of Mather and the woman in the image (above). As Justema's letters painfully detail, the differences were far from few.
